Edward Dethlefs, a north shore Green Lake resident named the City of Spicer in his will in 1978, leaving the city approximately 280 acres of farmland. The funds were to be used for the elderly community of Spicer. A Senior Citizens Multi-purpose building was constructed on what was part of the former site of a drive-in-theater.The first meals were prepared at the Senior Citizens Multi-purpose building on January 2, 1979. Artist Gone Wild
Over the past 10 years the Spicer Beautification Committee has sponsored several public art projects: “Fish Gone Wild”, “Poles Gone Wild”, “Chairs Gone Wild” and the latest “Artists Gone Wild”. Funding for each project has been through grants awarded from the Southwest Minnesota Arts Council (SMAC) with matching contributions from the Willmar Area Arts Council and the City of Spicer.
