Edward Dethlefs, a north shore Green Lake resident named the City of Spicer in his will in 1978, leaving the city approximately 280 acres of farmland. The funds were to be used for the elderly community of Spicer.
A Senior Citizens Multi-purpose building was constructed on what was part of the former site of a drive-in-theater.The first meals were prepared at the Senior Citizens Multi-purpose building on January 2, 1979. Today, LSS Meals are still being served on weekdays along with the Meals on Wheels delivery program.
The Spicer City Office moved into the building late 2011 to help share costs of operating the building. In 2019 the Dethlefs Senior Center was renamed Dethlefs Community Center and is open to all ages!
